Petrochemicals

Splitters and aromatics towers separating components that boil within a degree or two of each other — where every point of stage efficiency shows up in the product spec.

The duty

Close-boiling separations leave no margin for poor contact

Propylene–propane splitters are the textbook example: a relative volatility close to one means the column needs a very large number of stages, and any loss of efficiency translates directly into either lost purity or more reflux and more energy.

These are also very tall columns running at high reflux ratios, so hydraulic loads sit near their limits by design. Small improvements in tray or packing performance compound across a hundred stages.
