Knockout Drum

Bulk liquid removal ahead of compressors, flares and dryers. Pack sized to the real gas load.

The duty

Removing entrained liquid from a gas stream before it reaches equipment that cannot tolerate it.

A knockout drum removes entrained liquid from a gas stream before it reaches equipment that cannot tolerate it. The principle is simple — slow the gas down and let gravity and an impingement device do the work — but sizing is frequently done on rules of thumb rather than the actual gas load.

Retrofitting a correctly sized mesh or vane pack into an existing drum is one of the most cost-effective improvements available, because it needs no change to the vessel.

How Distillation Floating-Valve Trays Work

Distillation valve trays use movable valves that open with rising vapor, allowing it to bubble through liquid and create efficient mixing for mass transfer. Their self-adjusting design maintains stable performance by adapting to changing vapor flow conditions.
