Open Support for Structured Packing Beds
Structured Packing Support Grids are installed beneath structured packing beds to provide a stable and level foundation while allowing vapour and liquid to pass freely through the column.
Unlike random packing, structured packing is installed in organised sections or blocks that require consistent support across the column cross-section. The support grid carries the weight of the packing and retained liquid while maintaining a high open area beneath the bed, helping minimise pressure drop and avoid interference with the hydraulic performance of the packing.
The grid arrangement is designed to provide adequate structural strength without unnecessarily obstructing the vapour flow entering the packing. Liquid draining from the bed can pass freely through the grid, supporting effective counter-current operation and reducing the potential for localised liquid accumulation.
For larger diameter columns, Structured Packing Support Grids can be manufactured in sections for installation through existing vessel manways. Individual sections are supported from the column support ring and, where required, additional beams can be incorporated to accommodate the packing load and column dimensions.
Support grids can be supplied for new installations, tower revamps, or as replacement internals manufactured to suit an existing column and structured packing arrangement.
