Environmental duties are unusual in that the specification comes from outside the plant. Discharge consents and emissions limits get stricter over time, while the streams themselves get more difficult — fields water out, and waste streams become more concentrated.

That combination rules out simply adding vessels, particularly offshore where weight and footprint are fixed. The practical route is almost always to improve the separation happening inside the equipment already installed.
