The duty

Removing NH₃ from vent and process gas, protecting downstream catalyst and meeting emissions limits.

Ammonia is highly soluble in water, so absorption is straightforward in principle. The engineering sits in the details: getting even liquid distribution across the bed, managing the heat released as ammonia dissolves, and avoiding salt deposition where acidic washing is used.

Duties range from emissions compliance on a vent stack to protecting a downstream catalyst bed from a known poison. Both usually justify a packed column with careful distributor design.
