Emergency Chlorine Scrubber
Safety-Critical Absorber Design for Emergency Chlorine Release
The Challenge
In 2025, a major UK chemicals operator initiated a project to install an emergency chlorine scrubber system, providing a critical safeguard in the event of an accidental chlorine release.
The system was required to safely capture and neutralise chlorine, helping to protect plant personnel, surrounding communities and the environment, while meeting the facility’s stringent safety and environmental requirements.
Our Solution
Rosenberg Process was engaged to support the process design and engineering of the chlorine absorber, a key component within the emergency scrubber system.
Our scope included detailed process calculations, hydraulic assessment and equipment selection, ensuring the absorber was appropriately designed for the required emergency release conditions.
Rosenberg applied its specialist mass transfer expertise to establish a technically robust solution capable of delivering the required chlorine removal performance under safety-critical operating conditions.
The Result
The engineering study provided the client with a verified process design and equipment basis for the emergency chlorine absorber, supporting the implementation of a reliable and compliant emergency scrubber system.
The project demonstrates Rosenberg’s capability to apply specialist gas absorption and mass transfer engineering to critical process safety applications.
