Biofuel plants run on agricultural and waste feedstocks, so composition varies with harvest, supplier and season. A column optimised for one feed can struggle with the next, which puts a premium on turndown and tolerance rather than peak efficiency.

Fouling is the other constant. Biological solids, gums and polymerising components all build up on internals, so designs need open geometry and the fouling margin to keep running between cleans.
