Flare Gas Knockout

Removing liquid before the flare tip — a safety duty where reliability outranks efficiency.

The duty

A safety device that stops burning liquid reaching the flare tip — sized for the worst-case relief event, not for normal operation.

A flare knockout drum prevents burning liquid from reaching the flare tip and falling as rain. It is a safety device, sized for the worst-case relief event rather than for normal operation, which means it spends most of its life doing very little and then has to work perfectly.

Because relief flows are large and sudden, the internals must handle high transient velocity without re-entraining what they have just collected.
